Note: The information on this web page is now obsolete as the latest Google Groups site, (also known as "Google Groups 2"), returns different types of URIs for search results. The following details were accurate for Google Groups around 2004.
Ever wanted to post a Google Groups URI and found it to be very long?
After searching for the usenet article you're after, you may end up with a URI like the following:
Such a URI can be unsightly and difficult to use in a web page or usenet post. Fortunately, it's possible to trim the URI, by removing search criteria used to find the article. From the above URI, you may be able to tell that the following search terms were used to find the article wanted.
'group:alt.os.linux.slackware bob dobbs'
However, it's not necessary to include the keywords used to search for the article. All that is really needed is the reference to the article itself. This is found in the 'selm=foo' part of the query string. (The text after the question mark of the URI.) For that reason, the previously mentioned URI can be edited to a much neater and more manageable URI
